Shortly after the partition of India and subsequent independence from British rule, South Asian families (mostly Punjabis) found themselves making a three-week sea crossing to Britain in search of work and a more stable life for their families. Vilayati Tarti/Foreign Land is a documentary short that explores issues of displacement and identity through the perspectives of three Punjabi women whose three-week sea crossing brought them to Southall, West London -- colloquially known as Little India -- during the early 1960’s.

Remy Kharbanda is a Punjabi woman, activist researcher and budding documentary filmmaker based in Brooklyn, New York. Her work focuses on law enforcement interactions with women of color, immigration issues, the war on terror, and displacement in the South Asian Diaspora. Together with her partner, she runs Callejero Films, a production company. She is also one half of “RFR,” a New York City based research partnership which works with community-based organizations to facilitate research projects aimed at supporting popular education and organizing efforts.
