The Spinning Wheel Film Festival—a showcase of films by, about, or for Sikhs—will be held on November 17th, as an extension of the Sikh Heritage Evening. The Evening will also feature some of the filmmakers, whose work will be presented in the Festival. Proceeds from this unique event will go towards expanding the Sikh Center of Orange County facility and offering new services to the Sangat. Please come and enjoy an elegant and entertaining evening, and contribute to a truly worthy cause, and help fulfill our vision of serving you better.

“Sikhs in Print,”
Presented by the Singh Twins

The 2008 Sikhpoint calendar offers a kaleidoscope of Sikh imagery from the print history. The choice of images and accompanying text commentaries also touch upon achievements and ongoing contributions of Sikhs. The majority of images are taken from journalistic, documentary, and literary sources produced for the European, mostly British, audience. Nevertheless, they illustrate how Sikhs were perceived by western peoples and governments, as recorded by the historians, illustrators and journalists of the day, offering a snapshot of Sikh history and culture during a particularly fascinating period. The archive for these images was started in 1990 by the Singh Twins, contemporary British artists of International standing, whose award winning paintings have been acknowledged as constituting a unique genre in British Art.  Their works are featured in elite public and private collections worldwide, including the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art, the Royal Museum, Scotland, and the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C. The calendar has been designed by the Singh Twins, and will be presented and autographed by them at the Heritage Evening.

Planet Josh

“Planet Josh,” the Montreal-based band, is Canada’s latest export. It has taken the South-Asian music scene by storm. The band leaders, Rupinder Singh Magon and Qurram Hussain (Rup & Q), have been proclaimed Best New Artists by MTV India. The title track from their second album, Kabhi, remained in both Indian and MTV World Top 20 lists for weeks. Their third effort, Mausam, has been dominating the musical charts, and exemplifies the diversity in their music. But they are best known for their Bhangra concoctions, which includes their widely acclaimed collaboration with world-renowned star Nelly Furtado. They fuse Eastern and Western melodies, and their songs showcase both modern and traditional bhangra beats and music, but are strongly influenced by hip hop and pop music. The result is electrifying bhangra, the type you have never seen! You will witness amazing numbers from their albums—renditions that will get your feet kickin’! They will be backed by their band members on percussion, keyboard, violin, tablas, dholkis, guitars, and drums.

The Auction

This year’s event will present a combination of live and silent auctions. The live auction will be conducted by last year’s auction master, Victor Gonzalez, and his team. The auction will feature original pieces, and limited and special edition artwork from Singh Twins, and carvings and jewelry. The auction will also feature historical pieces from American heritage!
